KMX1 and KMX2 use an FTDI USB chip for the USB connection to your PC.

Usually Windows automatically installs FTDI VCP [Virtual COM Port] drivers however with some batches of FTDI chips the default windows drivers do NOT work. The latest version of FTDI VCP drivers also do NOT work and FTDI seem oblivious of that fact.

The previous version of FTDI VCP drivers does appear to work with all batches of FTDI chips.

When the FTDI drivers do not work with a particular batch of FTDI chips the Virtual Com Port will appear in Windows Device Manager however serial communications will not work

To rectify this situation

You need to download the;

FTDI software driver for Windows x86 CDM 202.08.28 WHQL 20Certified.zip

FTDI software driver for Windows x64 CDM 202.08.28 20WHQL 20Certified.zip

Once downloaded Unzip the file and REMEMBER where you UnZipped it to as you will need to Browse to it later

You must also disconnect Internet access to prevent Windows from searching for VCP Drivers and installing the wrong drivers again

Before you can install the correct FTDI VCP drivers you need to uninstall two incorrect VCP drivers

In Windows, go to Control Panel then to Device Manager

in Device Manager, expand the COM Ports by clicking on the left of Ports (COM & LPT)

identify the COM Port that appears when KMX1 or KMX2 is connected via a USB cable

Right click on that COM Port which is COM19 in this example, yours will be different.

Click on Uninstall

Tick Delete the driver software for this device
Click OK

collapse the COM Ports by clicking on the left of Ports (COM & LPT)

expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers by clicking on the left of Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Right click on USB Serial Converter

Click Uninstall

Tick Delete the driver software for this device
Click OK

Do not close Device Manager

Make sure you have disconnected Internet Access

Disconnect the USB cable from your PC to KMX1 or KMX2

reconnect the USB cable from your PC to KMX1 or KMX2

A new yellow flagged item will appear FT232R USB UART

Right Click on FT232R USB UART

Select Update Driver Software

Click on Browse
Browse to the location where you unzipped the downloaded Folder CDM 2.08.28 WHQL Certified
Make sure you tick Include subfolders
Click Next

The driver software will install

The driver software for USB Serial Converter has been installed
Click on Close

The yellow flagged item will have changed name to USB Serial Port

Right Click on USB Serial Port
Select Update Driver Software

Make sure the correct folder CDM 2.08.28 WHQL Certified is selected
Make sure Include subfolders is ticked
Click Next

The driver software will install

The driver software for USB Serial Port has been installed
Click on Close

There should be no more yellow flagged items
and a new USB Serial Port (COM22) in the example below has appeared, that is the KMX1 or KMX2 COM Port number and is now ready to be used.
